    SPRING HILL --

A Hernando County sheriff's deputy was injured Monday night in a standoff with a man holed up in a Spring Hill home.

According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Lance Origon was shot while deputies were checking on a foreclosed home.

Deputies were responding to a welfare check at 5351 Joyner Avenue Monday afternoon. Officials said the welfare check was due to the home being foreclosed on.

When deputies arrived and knocked on the door, they received no answer. Authorities became concerned, entered the house at 8:45 p.m. and the man in the home shot at them, according to the sheriff's office.

Origon, 31, was wounded though his injury was not serious.

Deputies returned fire, hitting the gunman, who later died. His identity has not been released.

Origon, with the agency since 2002, was taken to Spring Hill Regional Hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound. He was treated and released in about two hours.

    The case remains under investigation.

Not too sure, lots of things could have gone wrong. Could the owner have not heard the knock and thought they were invaders? did the police properly identify while knock and after entering? I think all police should have cameras on their uniform. People are too fast to blame the police sometimes and sometimes the police make mistakes as well. and sometimes, like all humans, they are bad. A camera would solve many issues (like it already does with dash cams)

So far the story is that the Deputy's responded to the house for a well fare check shortly after 9pm. They knocked and received no answer. They entered a legally occupied dwelling at 9pm... They occupant fired at the intruders, the deputy's fired back killing the occupant. This is the second time in the past year the Hernando County sheriffs office has killed someone while conducting a "well fare check". If someone enters my house at 9pm after I don't answer the door, there are going to be problems....

On the good side, The deputy suffered only a GSW to the arm and is expected to recover.

Was this a requested welfare check or just a Police Hazard check. There is also no mention if the oocupant was an owner/renter or a trespasser.

Not enough info to really decide about what happened...more to come, I'm sure.
Glad the deputy is not seriously injured.

Yes there was more to come, a lot more. The story wasn't as it originally seemed. Turns out its most likely suicide by SWAT team now... Kinda funny how there was no mention of a swat team or hour long stand off in the original story.
