I think this raises a good question. What would your responces have been. I've only ever been hit with mace once by a cop friend of mine, not full shot but it was enough that I couldn't see anything. Don't have a clue how to respond to an attack like that.

Strange thing,the area where this happened is mainly a farming community.There are some bad areas and some seedy bars,but for the most part,it is farms and industry.Anytime, anywhere.
It doesn't seem all that odd to me, but I suspect it depends on the location/population make up. I seem to remember a lot of robberies and even a few murders over "starter" jackets and expensive tennis shoes in Baltimore back in the 80's and early 90's.
