I'm not even sure I'd call this dirtbag a robber as I don't see anywhere in the story where he demanded any money from the clerk., but I could have missed it. Seems to me like he was there for murder.
Gang initiation, perhaps?

Had the gun gone off, I suspect that he would have received more than three wounds and would not have survived the encounter.
He did good and the Bg cleary intended to kill the clerk and most likely any witnesses.
To try to practice for when the adrenaline kicks in try this, sprint 100 yds and to the range and then draw and fire, see how accurate you are with you heart hammering and your lungs pumping
A real man loves his wife, and places his family as the most important thing in life. Nothing has brought me more peace and content in life than simply being a good husband and father.
I agree totally. Any shot that has any affect on the BG’s ability to be a lethal threat is a good hit.But anytime bullet meets BG flesh in this type of incident, it's a good thing.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost

It's all in the state of mind.
how is he only charged with felony assault and not attempted murder?
Sometimes a DA will choose ADW over Attempted Murder as usually with ADW he does not have to prove "specific intent" and the likely penalties are usually not that different.
Only got to say one thing to the husband. Great job.
