I'm not familiar with the UVA campus; is this the "ghetto" area around campus? I've noticed most larger universities have a ghetto area right outside the school, at some point around the campus. Not really a place where good things happen.

Ghetto dirtbags have to make a living, too. No sense in living far from work. The University of Florida has the same thing, and the campus edge is not safe at night.

Temple University is like that.... very nice campus...surrounded by the worse part of Philly

Not really. It's not far from it, but it's in the area where most of the bars/restaurants are. It's a pretty common place for students to hang out.

I don't remember a ghetto area when I went there. In fact there wasn't much noise made about crime at all. I had a dorm mate beat up once, that's all the crime I recall while I was there. Then there was the fraternity that shot flaming arrows at a neighboring fraternity, burning it down, but that's a different story...

With a population of about 40-45,000 people, you can expect a little crime. But, within about a 5 minute drive, you can go from a less desirable part of town to a part where people like this live.

Many celebrities seeking privacy call the area home including John Grisham, Sissy Spacek, the Dave Matthews Band, Jessica Lange, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Chris Daughtry, and Sam Sheppard.
