One sucker punch. This piece of CRAP is getting off WAY too easy.

It shouldn't matter wether he intended to kill or not! He threw the punch, he is responsible for it. It would be the same if we came out of a bar, saw a fight and decided to pull our weapon and shoot in the air and ended up killing someone on the 10th floor of the building next door. You didn't intend to kill someone, but you are responsible for your actions. He should get the 20 years.

Very true, but the DA made a good point about maybe an even lessor sentence and plea bargining is part of the system.
A few things come to mind. Don't be a spectator at bar fights and don't let your SA down, especially in high threat areas.
The guy that threw the punch looks and acts like a complete idiot. The only consolation to the victims' family not being able to beat him down, is that life will slowly do it for them.
Very very sad indeed. However, if you stay out of bars and places where people drink and act stupid, your chances of this happening to you are greatly reduced.

As sad as this is, even more sad is that this happens _a lot_!
We've had several of same condition sucker punch assaults resulting in KO and and the person either dying as result of the punch itself directly,or they falling and hitting their face/head on a hard fixed surface (curb, sidewalk, etc.) and dying either instantly or going int a coma to remain as such or go brain dead thereafter.
It was July when another case of same happened to a father attacked at his car by a felon as in front of his wife and family, as he had stopped his car at a red light to pick some flowers for his wife as that day was their anniversary.
BTW agreed with Tally. When you see a fight break out, you have to distance yourself from it.
Watch it from across the street and down the alley. Can't see things from there? Bring binoculars next time.
Also agreed with Duk.

I'm with Guantes. This is a very high-risk situation, and one's options should be limited to vacating the area or minimizing harm, depending on what's going on and who is doing it. Just standing around watching the festivities isn't on the menu.A few things come to mind. Don't be a spectator at bar fights and don't let your SA down, especially in high threat areas.
As for the perp, sad as the case is, it really does look like 2nd degree manslaughter. Even if the guy only does 2 years in prison, that's still a rough stretch.
