DETROIT -- A would-be carjacker is dead after a driver shot and killed him, police said.
The incident happened Tuesday at a gas station on Schaefer Highway and Fenkell Street on Detroitís west side.
A gunman approached a Cadillac Escalade with a man and a 5-year-old child inside. He exchanged words with the driver and eventually got into the front seat. Thatís when the vehicleís owner opened fire. Both men suffered gunshot wounds. The would-be carjacker was killed, investigators told Local 4. The victim was shot in the face but is expected to recover. The child was not hurt.
At the time of the shooting, the driverís wife was inside the gas station.
Police have not released the names of the victim or the would-be carjacker.

I saw this too on the news. I'm glad the victim will be okay and his son wasn't injured. I bet the wife, who was inside the gas station, was hysterical. It still amazes me that people don't think it will happen to them. I'm glad he was armed and licensed.

What a terrible experience...wife and kid in the car while the dirtbag jumps into the victim's car.
The victim took some lead, but because he WAS armed, he will still be able to be with his family...the dirtbag is where he belongs.

Yeah, that's it. This link mentions that the victim was shot in the leg, hip and face. The WDIV link just mentions the face.

Man, what a terrible thing for the wife to come back out to and for the child to witness. That is horrible. I'm glad the driver was armed and able to defend himself and his family. Glad he survived this tragic event. BG now taking a dirt nap.

Its funny, but I actually thought of this scenario while gassing up this morning. unlike I normally do, I left my key in the ignition (not on) as I was pumping and thought "well I know I will not shoot over property(if someone tries to jump in my car and drive off) but if I was a father and my child was in the backseat I'd def shoot the SOB"

The news is reporting that 24 shots were fired during this incident. Amazing that nobody else was injured. If it were just the car, it would have been all his. With a child/spouse inside, you
better believe i'm doing all i can.

He had to fight it out with this guy.
The BG wasn't just stealing his car, he was going to take his young son too.
If this shooting wasn't justified...nothing is.

If I read the story right, the guy was not out with his wife, he was out with another woman and her son. His son and wife were not there.

As I understand it it was not his wife and child BUT his girlfriend and her child according to the wife's report. Wife will not visit hospital because husband is getting threats on his life from the victims fanily.
