He made a serious mistake. The purse was not worth the risk. Even if I had a gun I would not have started a shoot out with him. Be a good witness and just let him have the purse.

Not enough details to determine what the best course of action would be. Obviously, that of the samaritan was not it.

Poor writing... The author should have mentioned at this point that the "victim" in this sentence was a male subject that was a bystander and not the female who's purse the perp took. This had me confused at first.
As stated by NJB, this just reinforces that it's best to be a good witness.

OK.....if they claim to have all this video of the individual, why did they ONLY give a vague description of him?????????????

Just shoot the guy next to you in the knee and run like heck.
It's certainly one of the possible outcomes. One must be prepared to go all out in any physical encounter, particularly when potential death is on the line. That's not a time to be unarmed, or to hold back in any way. That's a good way to get seriously harmed or killed. Unknown what occurred in this specific instance.

I think this is where a great many problems occur for the "average" person who decides to intervene.
First, they do not have a grasp of the level of incident that they are injecting themself into.
Second, they are not prepared to go from strong talk to life and death in a matter of seconds.
Third, they are not prepared to actually take a life if necessary.
I'm sure there are more, but those immediately come to mind.

Sure, a purse wasn't worth it. But, was the woman's life worth it? He had a gun, willing to kill. Who's to say he wouldn't have killed the woman instead. I hope they find the SOB, maybe put one in his head while they're at it.

Sad. Very sad.
It sounds as though it may have been an impulsive, type of reaction;

Its difficult to just throw the 'be a good witness' tag when the woman could have potentially been in serious trouble. Assuming she was, I would have tried to step in as well.
Pick and choose your battles. This wouldn't have been mine.
