I have seen older vehicles (befor converters) backfire and the buildup of fuel in the exhaust system causes a flash out the exhaust pipe.
Picture this. The officers arrive on the "shots fired" call with the van identified as the source. They obs the veh and as they are exiting thier unit, their attention is momentarily diverted to where they are stepping so they don't fall on their butts. They hear the backfire and peripherally see the flash, but not sufficiently to see that it is from the exhaust pipe. Believing they are under fire, they duck behind the doors and return fire through the rolled up windows, oops. Just a possible explaination.
Yes, I was referring to them shooting out there own windows.

I remember in my late teens we would cruise by a crowd of people and turn the key off while pumping the gas pedal like crazy, as soon as we got up next to them we would turn the key back on and kapow, every now and then we would blow a muffler apart. Funny as hell back then, not so funny now.

Maybe their coworkers will want to add some white van "pop ups" at the range for them , if they ever get to see it again that is.

Idiotic at best, endangering the public conservatively, and bad all of the way around.

Back in the '50s I had manual cutout to a set of straight pipes w/ a spark-plug brazed into the tailpipe, coil in the trunk and a push button on the dash. No " turn the key off" or "pumping the gas pedal" required.

Maybe those guys should have been treated like Barney Fife... one bullet and it's in their pocket. THINK before you open fire like a gangsta.
