Great, another idiot. Why do people think it's ok to point any type of gun at someone else as a prank, air rifle or not. And then to pull the trigger? Someone wasn't paying attention when God was handing out brains.

I smell bovine excrement. How would a functionally intelligent person not know that it was a real rifle.

Rule #1 - A gun is loaded - always. (even if just checked clear!)

Rule #2 - NEVER point a gun at anything you do not wish to DESTROY

Rule #3 - Keep finger off trigger until actually intending to shoot.

Rule #4 - Know your target - and what is beyond.

A "prank" is no longer a prank when someone dies because of it.

Clearly, an erroneous assumption on your part that "functional intelligence" was present.

Seriously though, even if it had been an air gun what kind of prank is that and what kind of mindset person thinks stupid stuff up like this?!

Never mind that at near point blank range even an air gun firing a BB or pellet (.177 or even .22 caliber) can and has KILLED people!

11-Year-Old Warned Of BB Gun Dangers Before Accident
No Charges To Be Filed In Deadly Shooting

...Police said the boys had been playing with unloaded BB and pellet guns, pretending to shoot each other. Someone else loaded the BB gun, but the boys did not know it.

Police said Barnes was shot in the chest at fairly close range, causing damage to his heart and death...

Passaic County woman killed by pellet gun
    Published: Saturday, January 03, 2009, 6:04 PM Updated: Saturday, January 03, 2009, 7:11 PM

A 44-year-old Passaic County woman died yesterday after her husband shot her in the back with a pellet gun the couple used to hunt squirrels, police said.

Authorities said Cheryl McDonald of West Milford, was shot inside her home on Weeden Drive. She died en route to Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains at about 10:30 a.m....

...Frank McDonald called 911 at about 10 a.m., to report his wife had accidentally been struck in the back with a pellet and was "having difficulty breathing," said Capt. James Beatrice, head of the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit.

At this stage in the game of life anyone who does not know that solid projectile firing devices can KILL a person, regardless of caliber or projectile weight & type, then they really should be sat down and told the ways and means of REAL life.

There is no 'even' a .22 or 'even' a BB/pellet gun can kill you.
    There is only this:

    1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

    2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

    3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

Very simple lessons to learn, yet sadly far too many people find that they have to learn as much the hard way at the expense of other people property and/or life.

Very many intelligent people are completely and functionally ignorant as it comes to firearms handling in general never mind identification.
But it does not matter if a person has the ability to properly ID a firearm from an airgun (pneumatic) from a toy (i.e. Airsoft/Electric).

All that matters and is key to functional safety is that if the handler 1) Knows and 2) Follows/Adheres to the 3) Very simple and basic gun safety rules (outlined above) then at the end of the day nobody nowhere regardless of what the item might be in their hand will walk away harmed or harmful in any way.

Very sad, for everyone involved including both familes and associated friends who will no doubt lay blame at the gun in part or whole.

Lots of young guys running around with no firearms training. Generation skippers some, Dad wasn't into guns, so they were never taught. Now these new "city types" (I'm not using that derogatorily) that haven't hunted or shot as kids growing up, are going out and buying ARs and Glocks, with no knowledge of the safety rules. (part of the problem is no places to shoot, you used to be able to drive a few miles into the country and take some practice shots)

I've PO'd some of them, great guys, but for me, the fun kinda ends when they cover you with a fully loaded AK, safety off, and their finger on the trigger...."what'd you say" as they spin around and point the muzzle right at you. Then they even get grumpy when you try to give them pointers.

They aren't the type to go seek out training from those that know. What do we do to correct this?
