Just for discussion, this morning I was in a parking lot in front of the gym where I do my MA practice. An older woman pulled up, eyeballed me, I could tell she wasn't sure it was safe to approach me for help. So I deliberately looked away from her, walked away from her direction a bit. She timidly emerged from her car, holding a bible and some paper in front of her as if they would protect her should she have picked the wrong man to seek help from. (Maybe she had a knife or gun under there, who knows at that instant?)

Meanwhile, I'm also wondering what's going on.

It turned out to be nothing but someone who was simply lost. I gave her the assistance she needed and even allowed her to follow my car to go in the right direction.

Would I have been as "charming" and polite and nice if it were a young man? Probably not.

What I'm trying to convey is that you have to evaluate each situation as it comes. I'm not so jaded yet that I think ANYONE who approaches me in a parking lot is necessarily up to trouble.

Sort of like how I sometimes see the water truck pull up for a medical emergency (after the ambulance has gotten there). What's going on?
The two times we needed EMS /ambulance to come to our house the ladder truck came also. It was explained to me that ALL of the firemen have EMS training and this way they get more help to a scene until they fully know what is going on. Also, sometimes they need to use axes or other tools to break in to something to rescue trapped individuals and these aren't kept in the ambulance.

I live a mile from the fire station if that much, and I can tell you both time we needed them we could hear the siren the second they were out the gate. Very comforting.

When I hear things like this I WISH I could have walked up on them during - before they got away.

While I understand the desire, I fear that in this case you may have been disappointed with the end results.
