APOPKA, Fla. (AP) — Deputies say someone burglarized the central Florida home of boxer Christy Martin after she was hospitalized with gunshot and stab wounds.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Solomons says a friend contacted authorities after going to the Apopka-area home to pick up some belongings for the Bluefield, W.Va. native.
Deputies determined the home had been burglarized. It’s not clear if anything was stolen.
Martin flagged down a motorist Tuesday evening after being shot and stabbed in the torso and left leg. The motorist took her to Florida Hospital Apopka.
Deputies say she was injured by her husband, James Martin, who remains at large.
Christy Martin was a pioneer in women’s boxing in the 1990s, once landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
