Man critically injured in accidental shooting

    Oops.

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=13448862

SALT LAKE CITY -- A man is in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself while checking for burglars.

Salt Lake police say it happened around 3:20 a.m. at a residence near 900 East and 500 South. They say the man thought he heard someone in his apartment, woke up and grabbed his .22-caliber handgun and his flashlight.

He went to turn on his flashlight but pulled the gun's trigger instead.

The bullet hit him in the chest. He was able to call 911. Officers broke down the apartment door and found him injured. The man was taken to University of Utah Medical Center in critical condition.

Police say there is no evidence of a burglary in the apartment.
We're all in favor of reducing violent crime. It's just that pro-gunners have a method that is proven effective. Anti-gunners don't.

Wow... I've done a fair number of dumb things in my day, but point a gun at my chest and pull the trigger is still (thankfully) not on that list...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

I think he has to fear himself more than a burglar. Stupid is as stupid does.

    It's just a 22. It's like a high powered BB gun, right?

quite effective if shot placement is correct...a .22 is known as a bone chaser and can raise holy heck inside the body bouncing off of bone and changing directions...its more than capable of severing an artery or doing severe damage to an internal organ...bb's dont travel anywhere near the speed of a .22 nor do they carry the energy....

I think Coder was being sarcastic...

    The .22 is a favorite assassin's weapon.

    Agreed....That was my first thought.

How do you get the barrel of a handgun pointed at your chest without _trying_.
As well how is a trigger similar to a flashlight actuator.

    4 simple rules, follow them!

Those darn trigger activated flashlights will get ya everytime. It was probably one of those ugly black assualt flashlights that holds more than 4 batteries

Don't know how He did it but if your flashlight doesn't feel any different than your pistol, time for some training. http://www.compactappliance.com/Spot...efault,sc.html hope he's ok

hrm, well, actually...perhaps not a BB per say, but the lead pellets from some airguns these days are just as bad...some of those bad boys are pushing 1300 fps, but they're not carrying the same energy seeing as the weight is significantly lower...

I heard the same thing. Hard to match bullet with a gun.
