Anyway, I am willing to bet it wasn't loaded with buckshot.

We had a somewhat similar case like this one just south of where I live a couple of years ago.

Just like in this case, an extremely drunk man stumbled into a home in the middle of the night. Mother and daughter are awakened by the noise, and find the strange man passed out on a couch in the living room. They both flee the house in a car, and fail to dial 911.

Instead, they drive to a nearby bar, where their husband and father has been heavily drinking. Again, despite both husband and wife having cell phones, no one dials 911. All 3 return to their home, and the husband retrieves his deer rifle. He confronts the man, who is sill lying on the couch, and ends up shooting him once in the chest, killing him very quickly. At that point, 911 is called, and the husband invokes the "castle doctrine" that he was defending his home.

Turned out the drunk man was from Alaska. He had been in town for the past 3 months, caring for his dying mother. She past away, after a slow and agonizing death. Her son has stayed in town to take care of her estate. People said that he had become very depressed, watching his mother slowly dying before his eyes for so long a time. And that he had begun to drink heavily after she died. He had no criminal record of any kind.

The local DA ended up filing charges against the homeowner, who ended up pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide, as part of a plea bargain to avoid a trial. He was sentenced to 2 years in state prison a year ago, and still resides there today.

The hand and the buttocks are not desirable areas to shoot any attacker.

I'm not sure how one can shoot a person in the buttocks, if the person is being a threat towards them.

I don't know about you, but I can have my feet facing north, and fire an aimed shot south.

I also have a 20 ga shotgun. Bought it in late 60's I believe. Savage double barrel. Its not my principle self defense gun but i do keep it ready. #4 shot like folks use on rabbits sometimes is the largest they sell locally for me.
