Sad: 9 Year Old Boy shot in Orange County hunting accident
ORANGE COUNTY (WABC) -- A boy, age 9, is in the hospital Saturday night after he was accidentally shot while helping to hunt deer in Orange County.
It happened Saturday afternoon near the Berea Elementary School in Montgomery.
Authorities say David Calabrese, 9, was helping to drive out deer with his step-father, uncle and two other men when he took off his bright orange hat because he was hot.

How does one mistake a human, a dog, a cow, or anything else for a deer?
I've even heard a hunter state he only had a 'brush shot'. I inquired as to what a brush shot was and he said, "It's when you see the brush move, so you shoot."
There is NO EXCUSE for not knowing your target. Either you clearly see the deer, or you don't take the shot.
"That I cannot do."
"Give this to, uh, Clemenza. I want reliable people, people who aren't going to be carried away. After all we're not murderers in spite of what this undertaker thinks."

That seems like sage advice to me!

I saw this on the news last night. Thankfully the kid will be ok, amazing that he was able to walk himself out and get help.

I don't understand how anyone would think a kid looks like a deer or why anyone would shoot before identifying there target.

This _exactly_ why wearing hunter orange ON YOUR BODY (!), not singularly the head, is an excellent idea to do regardless of whether state laws compel one to do so or not.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9186.html
Especially so with a new hunter out for an opportunity to learn, never mind that for some odd reason the shooter was positioned _rear_ of the flushers AND that none of the adults thought to keep the child with them in the immediate (within arms reach!) so as to keep him from closing the gap against zone of fire.
Another issue I have with this is; "Although wounded, the boy was able to walk 300 yards out of the woods."
Umm....WHY!?!
Why _exactly_ was a gut shot anybody, never mind being a 9 yr. old child, allowed to walk himself out of the woods for any distance as rather than being told to stay in place and have an adult from the hunting party go to seek help and bring them back to the site where he was shot.
Why did these FOUR adults not think to stay in place or at least carry the boy via a field expedient stretcher of some sort.
To my view per not just one but all four of these gaffe items, the four adults let each other down and in kind let the boy down too.
They all are culpable and responsible even as law enforcement may not choose, now or later, to cite them with any penalty.
