Terrible: 12 Year Old Fataly Shoots Another 12 Year Old With Father's Gun
WILTON (NY) -- A 12-year-old boy who was playing with his father's handgun unintentionally shot and killed his 12-year-old friend inside their Wilton home at around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Saratoga County law enforcement officials said.
The 12-year-olds, both students at Maple Avenue Middle School in Greenfield, were playing with what they thought was an unloaded gun when the weapon discharged and struck the victim, seventh-grader Nicholas N. Naumkin of Wilton, in the head, police and school sources said.

Terrible accident, if only the father had taught his son firearm safety most likely the curiosity would have been taken away... just terrible...

It would have been even better if the father locked up his guns.

Seconded.
One kid taught is fine, but the _friend_ was not and he was dumb enough to stand there and play with t he gun as well as let the boy point it at him.
Teaching your own kid(s) is at best only one half (50%) of the equation solving while guns locked up when not in use solve the problem fully as in 100%. Go ahead and teach your kids which is great, but don't depend on that singularly.

The most valuable gun safety lesson I was ever taught was from my Uncle. "Unloaded guns kill people." he said.

Lock up your guns people. Every firearm, magazine, and round should be under lock and key at all times unless in the immediate control of a responsible, authorized adult. Yes, even if you gun-proof your kids.
It is a simple thing that greatly reduces risk.

Do we have the same uncle??? My (then) LEO uncle told my that very thing many, many moons ago.
Terriable and tragic. Lock 'em up when not on your person and talk with those young'uns and teach 'em early.

"Don't meddle with old unloaded firearms. They are the most deadly and unerring things that have ever been created by man. You don't have to take any pains at all with them; you don't have to have a rest, you don't have to have any sights on the gun, you don't have to take aim, even. No, you just pick out a relative and bang away, and you are sure to get him. A youth who can't hit a cathedral at thirty yards with a Gatling gun in three-quarters of an hour, can take up an old empty musket and bag his mother every time at a hundred. Think what Waterloo would have been if one of the armies had been boys armed with old rusty muskets supposed not to be loaded, and the other army had been composed of their female relations. The very thought of it makes me shudder."-Mark Twain

- As Janq mentioned, that's only half of the problem. You can teach your kids all you want, but that doesn't mean the other kid was taught anything about firearm safety. There is absolutely no reason that this gun should have been unsecured.
