Update: Long Island Shooter John White Commuted

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/12/23/...ex.html?hpt=T2

ew York (CNN) -- Gov. David A. Paterson commuted the prison sentence Thursday of a man convicted of killing an unarmed teenage boy during a racially charged confrontation, officials said.

John White was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the shooting death of 17-year-old Daniel Cicciaro and was sentenced to up to four years in prison.

    ...continued
It took me a minute, but here is the old thread on it:

The quick rundown, there was some sort of altercation between Mr. White's 19 year old son and a group of teens. The teens arrived at White's house, he retrieved an unregistered (and therefore illegal) handgun, went outside to the street to meet the teens, shot, and killed one of them. He claims to have been "sweeping" them when the gun accidentally discharged.

The whole thing became a race mess and received a fair amount of publicity.

    my take:

Had White chosen to stay inside and call 911, it would have been a non-incident. Instead, he chose to meet them in the street, point his gun at them, and pull the trigger. His the caused the death and he was convicted in court.

Why do politicians keep pardoning/commuting felons? People spend more time in prison for writing bad checks than this manslaughter conviction...!?!

    This is absolutely a disgrace.

Mr. White initiated the physical confrontation, and then escalated it to deadly force by brandishing the gun. He then shot an unarmed teenager in the face.

    He belongs in prison.

To make it even worse, Patterson lacked the courage to even inform the victim's family of what he was doing, much less do the honorable thing and seek out and consider their objections to the commutation.

    What a coward.

    Agreed with both you guys.

I do recall this incident, very controversial at the time nationally and here as well, and I too stand by he should have kept his butt along with his son in the house and dialed the cops then _waited_ for them to arrive.
Instead he chooses to grab a gun go into his yard to _confront_ (not defend), which IIRC poured into the street, and then he stands there with gun in hand brandishing to end up pointing it at persons...Who themselves stupidly did not back down and challenged the frog to jump.
He very likely thought I've got a gun everybody will get scared and scatter. That though is often enough in reports not the case.

Sad as it might be dude should be left to do the time sentenced.
