What is an unsupervised rookie doing on a domestic call? My understanding is they are some of the most dangerous calls.

Prayers said for her and her family.

    Unhappy

Yes domestics are some of the most dangerous calls an officer responds to and yes more than one officer is usually sent. The probationary period is usually one year however she may have completed her field training phase and was assigned to a zone. We do not know if a backup was assigned to the call and the deceased officer arrived first and went directly to the scene. Very sad situation.

they should never send a female alone to a domestic let alone a rookie.... the guy already whacks women around and has no respect for them.... I dont think the badge makes a difference and probably escalated it

    From http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...5e696746.html:

Nettles had prior convictions for rape of a child, domestic violence assault, burglary and failure to register as a sex offender, police documents said.
And he was out of prison why?!?!

From the articles, it appears this was initially a domestic dispute with one party having left the scene. The slain officer was taking a report when the other half of the domestic dispute returned (20 minutes or more later).

I believe this to be the wrong question. The correct question, IMHO, would be "And he was still alive, why?!?!"

Why was an officer sent _alone_ to a domestic violence scene at all...When it is very well known that these type incidents are fraught with emotion and irrational acting people, who do leave and return (!).

It matters not to me that she was a rookie, or that the shooter was a felon on parole or even that the officer placed her body so as to protect the child.
What is key to me here is that the officer was there alone.
How is a single officer supposed to watch their front, back and side all at the same time while also taking a report ND trying to ascertain facts & figures toward building a case for arrest of the person who fled prior?!

There should have been a second if not a third officer on site to assist and support, for officer security alone never mind that of the assault victim too.

To my view the police there let down both one of their own (a rookie!) AND they also let down a citizen who had called requesting functional aid & support.
Also this child was let down too...Now an orphan and _motherless_ as well as having to live the remainder of her years on this earth remembering this day when when she witnessed her mother murdered, a police proven to be useless if not defenseless (!) and a murderous mad man commit suicide.

Everybody loses here, and this was very much preventable.
Clearly this agencys 'protocol' as in _specific_ to a domestic violence call was wrong, and now requires revision/upgrading.

I mean come on, there was an 11 yr. old child on site.
That alone is reason enough to call in a second officer if just to calm and mentally care for that person alone.

"There has been some speculation as to whether or not Smith, who graduated from the police academy over the summer and completed her field training on Dec. 13, should have been alone while responding to the domestic disturbance report. Arlington's Sgt. Dace Clifton said the department typically sends one officer out for Priority 3, report-related calls, such as the one Smith was responding to and that protocol was followed." - To Protect And Serve : |

Yes Paul, a dirt bag...Circumstantial or otherwise.

Dude was reported to have been 24 at the time of the incident there.
    Old enough to know, better.
