Local Congressman Heath Shuler and some other members of the House of Representatives say they will carry concealed weapons for protection in their home districts, following Saturday's shooting of Arizona Democrat Gabby Giffords in Tucson. Shuler says he will carry the permitted handgun only when he is away from Capitol Hill and visiting the mountains. Shuler says he and most other House members rely on Capitol Police for security while in Washington. Congressman Shuler had a serious threat made on his life in 2009 and says he has periodically armed himself since then

    Good for him.

Good for him. From what he said, he has realistic expectations for it's effectiveness, and understands that in a stationary location, like a "congress on the corner" screening those getting in line will be more effective. It's pretty clear that calling 911 isn't going to help when there is an assassin carrying out a planned attack - good chance being armed won't help either, but he recognizes that.

Good for him for getting his staff trained and armed. I carry every day, why shouldn't they? Accepting responsibility for one's personal safety during the first 1 to 20 minutes of an attack is the first step in being safer. There is no "true safety" in the sense of being invulnerable, but being alert, situationally aware, and able to defend one's self is a heck of a good step in the right direction. With their head into it so they don't over react, they will do as well as they can.

They will need to practice but tht was doubtless covered in the training.

That’s a good thing for all of us. However, I won’t be surprised if some will want a formal security detail assigned to them. That whole sense of empowerment may be too hard to resist.
