I'm sorry if I might seem harsh but the kid broke the law as soon as he took the weapon onto school property. Doesn't matter what he was thinking or feeling. He broke the law.

However, Los Angeles police Lt. John Pasquariello said later it was a crime to bring a gun to campus. The unidentified student was arrested and charges were pending, he said.

"We don't know exactly what happened," Pasquariello said. "Traditionally, guns don't go off without someone's finger on the trigger."

Traditionally, you don't stick a loaded firearm in a bag with a bunch of other loose stuff.
Which is a take home message for anyone who practices off-body carry or pocket carry. Holster AND separate compartment with nothing else in there.
