    Whenever I read this type of remark from reporters I wonder what law they are referring to.

    Just like "gunfights in the street" and other such nonsense, oddly reporters have a limited vocabulary and must pull cliches out of their playbook whenever the facts don't gel with their worldview.

    agreed! there is a difference between "took the law into his own hands" while there is a crime being committed and "took the law into his own hands" after as a sort of revenge.
