Hope he doesn't get into trouble but looks like he was justified. I wonder what OC would have done to the dog? I'd hate to be the one using it and find out it didn't work.

So a 140 pound dog an owner can't control attacks another dog,the owner shoots the vicious dog,and the humane society is looking into charges for animal cruelty charges.

This is why I keep pepper spray on my dog's leash. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot another dog to save mine, but I'd like to avoid that situation.

140 pounds is a whole lot of weight to gain all at once! Especially if it's chewing on you at the the time.

The shooting does appear justified. One would assume that the reference to animal cruelty is in relation to the shooting, but the article does not specifically state that. While unlikely, it is possible their investigation is in relation to the treatment of the attacking dog, prior to the attack.
I would be inclined to try oc first. In a residential neighborhood, I would probably use a knife rather than shooting.

OC works well on dogs if you can get a good shot in their face. I also carry either an ASP collapsable baton or a Cane Master or Cold Steel cane when walking my dogs. I have delt with several vicious dogs over the years at work and have never had one that a liberal application of a baton did not work on. A handgun would be my last resort but if needed then you do what you have to do.

Wow what a terrible story, I had two Rotty's one was mean and one was sweet, they were sisters and I have no idea why one seemed to hate other dogs???? The sweet one was charged by a loose Chow one time I was trying to hold her sister back (as she was muzzeled) and get a free hand for the pepper spray when all of a sudden my sweet rotty puffed out her chest all her hair stood up and her teeth came out and she stared the charging dog down, the chow made a u turn and went home. Tilly seemed to be somewhat full of herself for the rest of the night haha...............

Poor Flato was just about to turn his life around and become a seeing eye dog.

"If he was aggressive, he would have went after the owner in self-defense," Martinez said.
Now that's some unique logic right there.
As soon as Flato recognized the imminent threat of death or grave bodily harm presented by the "owner's" gun . . . Duhh??
Probably no such thing dog-on-dog aggression either!
