Even though we live in a relatively safe Memphis suburb, it's local news like this that caused my wife to stop asking me why I had to carry a gun everywhere we go.

The 1st event took place where my mom regularly shops.
The second is less than a mile from where she lives.
The third is in my aunts neigborhood.

I can't get my mom or my aunt to see the danger.
(I'm glad God seems to protect them.)

The victim answered a knock on his door in the Highland Point Apartments at 3691 Coventry, near Winchester and Outland, about 3:15 a.m.

When he opened the door, the gunman asked to see someone the victim did not know, according to police reports. When the victim closed the door, a bullet came flying through the door, striking the victim in the chest, police said.
    Why do people do this?

If you are not expecting someone then do not open your door.
Heck you don't even have to answer the door such as to say who is there?

Especially at this hour of the morning...No good can come from this!
At such an hour it'll either be the police or trouble, and neither will be good in the end.

DO NOT DO THIS after dusk nor in the early morning hours.
Heck I don't answer my door period at any time of the day or night without confirming who goes there and why, before opening my door.
I've even been known to say nothing and just observe a door knocker/bell ringer and let them decide to leave and go on about their biz mid day....To later be informed it was the husband of one of my wifes friends (never seen him before then) that wanted to drop something off for my wife as an errand for his wife.

I don't care who it is.
If I don't know you and am not expecting you; If you aren't dressed as a cop or UPS/USPS/FedEx...Then chances are good that I'm not going to open my door to you.

    Especially so @ 3:15A!

    P.S.
Carjackings and club shootings happen everywhere every day in the USA, not just Memphis.
I would not take thee three incidents in a day as being indicative of a crime issue in Memphis nor would I reference to this report singularly as being a reason to carry/keep arms.
This is just another day in an American major city with a population greater than 100 by my view.

+1 on Janq's comments. This just sounds like "somewhere USA", normal stuff.

    +1 Jang

My mom is pretty AG. She was married to two differnt SOBs that got there jollies playing Russian Roulete with her head. She has also been the victim of 2 HIRs and a burglary. She's been robbed and had her car stolen. Yet, she still she has no need to protect herself.

We have really gotten in a few HELLACIOUS arguements about this; (especially the last couple of years). But, she feels (maybe, rightfully so?), that God has protected her over the years and will continue to do so.

All I know is my children canNOT go visit grandmaw in Memphis by themselves.

BTW, she NEVER answers the door to anyone she is NOT expecting.

BUT!!!! That can and HAS BACKFIRED!

(It's ALWAYS a toss up. Do you answer the door and risk a HIR; or do you keep quiet and risk a burglary that can turn into an HIR?)

    TCox,

If I'm home, not answering the door and some fool decides okay I'll try to break in...Good luck to that fool as he enters a fatal funnel be it by door or window.

I'd much rather lay in wait for an entrant than to open my door and be caught at the breech face to face with hell in high water pants.

I also will not answer the door if I cannot ID the person and/or was not expecting anyone.
