Police: Road rage led to Sunday night shooting

Police say a Sunday night shooting at the Five Star Food Mart near Lincoln Parkway in Elizabethtown stemmed from road rage a few miles earlier in the northbound lane of Interstate 65.

The shooting left Su Hong Springer, 53, of Murfreesboro, Tenn. in critical condition at University Hospital in Louisville.

Elizabethtown police say through their investigation they have found that Springer, driving a Dodge Caravan, was tailgating another vehicle. When that vehicle and another, driving in tandem, exited the interstate to purchase gas, Springer followed the vehicles to Five Star.

According to surveillance video, Springer's vehicle pulled into the parking lot and then the passenger side window was lowered. A handgun is reported to be pointed out of the Caravan at occupants in a Nissan Rogue. Shots are fired and Springer was struck once in the upper body.

The Caravan then pulled away from the gas pump area, crossed East Dixie and landed in a ditch, police said.

Springer allegedly was shot by Howard K. Wright, 24, of Memphis, Tenn., according to police. No charges have been filed and the investigation continues.

Police were called shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

Springer was transported by Hardin County Emergency Medical Services to Hardin Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to University Hospital.

EPD sopkesman Virgil Willoughby said the grand jury will look at the case.

Sounds like he got just what he was looking for. The road rage people had better get it through their heads that there has been a vast increase in the number of people who have armed themselves for self-protection, and they are not going to lay down and be a victim anymore.

I replied on what was in the story, he was tailgating, followed the other vehicle off the Interstate, rolled down his window and displayed a gun. I don't care where he is shot at that point!

Guess what cops are trained to do if someone points a gun at them on a stop? Get to the back of the car, at an extreme angle to the person with the gun so they can't get shot. Usually this ends with an inbound hail of bullets through the back window. I have no problem with the person in the van getting shot in the back.

Tailgate someone, display a firearm while confronting them = expect to get shot (back, front, top, bottom, it doesn't matter at that point unless you are obviously departing and no longer a threat)

This road rage nut got everything he was looking for......first you have someone on your bumper on the freeway...you exit and he follows you...pulls up near you off the x-way and points a gun at you? BIG mistake on his part...poor victim selection process in my book.

    YOU WERE TOLD?

Yet whoever told you neglected to tell the media. No mention of him being shot in the back. But he pulled a gun and pointed, he gets shot. Where doesn't matter.

Not defending the guy that got shot..... just yet. But police often withhold information from the media during an ongoing investigation.

I was told too. But I am actually sitting in his hospital room with him right now. He DID get shot in the back. And do you know for a FACT he even pulled a gun? That wasn't a FACT in the story. And even if he did, who is to know if he was the first to pull the gun or not. He has been in a coma since he was shot. The only side of the story we have is from the people who shot him who could be attempted murderers, but we won't know until Su wakes up. Anything else you would like to know? I can ask him for you but I'm pretty sure he won't respond.
