An off-duty Chicago Police officer — who was dressed as a clown and leaving a community fund-raising event for toddlers — fatally shot a 16-year-old boy trying to rob him on the South Side Friday night, police said.
The teen approached the off-duty officer at 10:10 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 87th Street and produced a gun, according to a statement from police.
The officer and the teen struggled, and the gun discharged and struck the boy, police said.
The teen’s weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the teen as Jerry Moore of the 8500 block of South Seeley. He died at the scene, officials said.
The officer is “very active’’ in the community and was in the costume because he was entertaining toddlers attending a sleepover at a daycare center prior to the shooting, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
The officer suffered minor injuries, police said. No children were nearby when the incident occurred, police said.
Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
