Crazy weekend for shootings.
I've seen more shooting rampages reported this weekend than I think I'd normally see in a year. Several of these are in my own metroplex. Lets see if I can count them all:
- Norway
- 4 Shot in Lancaster, TX
- 5 killed in Roller Rink in Grand Prairie, TX
- 1 Man shot in Mansfield, TX
- 1 dead, 8 wounded in Stockton, CA
- 7 wounded in Casino near Seattle
- 12 injured in Seattle Car Show
I bet I've probably missed something. And people have the nerve to ask me why I need to carry a gun for my protection.

Yup. 4 year old killed fishing with his dad. Drunk neighbor tried to shoot the light out at the end of the pier. That makes three children in three weeks in Indiana. All accidental shootings.
Every one of the above incidents is fuel on the fire for the anti's. How do you control nut jobs and stupidity? Seriously. Add the Norway madness and with Mr. O at the head, we are in for some rough times. Just when we were getting a sane message across to America.

As the world grows more deadly each week, I do not sense that these kinds of incidents are going to decrease.
A very sad commentary on the 'state of our nation'.

Yet violent crime has been on a steady decline for years in this country.

Blame it on the weather and August hasn't even arrived.

The question here is: are there more violent crimes, or do they get more media coverage?
I have family down in the Phoenix area, and they have the daily shooting segment in the local news. Well, they might as well have it because a day without a shooting seems to be rare. The six days I spent there over last Christmas were no exceptions to that rule either.

That's a tough one. Statistics seem to show that there are more than 20 years ago, but I'm betting that expanded news coverage & the newsie's need for ratings might be bringing this stuff to the forefront.

Police think that the Mormon Lake shootings may have been a murder-suicide. Just a terrible weekend. What is it about the heat that makes people lose their minds?

I don't know about the rest of the world but they are saying in Houston the homicide rate is on track to be the lowest since the early 1960's.

Yeah, somehow the near daily shootings in Charlotte, NC have caused a decrease in the violent crime rate. Where's the scratching my head smilie? I hear it said, I read the news reports, but I'm just not feeling it. Maybe it's the 24/7 news. Dunno.

It is the same way in other parts of North Carolina. They tell me that the UCR says violence is down. I haven't seen it lately. Of course the begining of the year was pretty slow.
