Bad - 7 Kids Mauled by Bear in Alaska

Apparently the kids were in a survival camp program. Two are in critical condition, three are in serious condition, and two have minor injuries.

While I respect the program, and what it does for the kids, they should have had an armed instructor in the front to limit the damage in a situation like this. I hope the kids survive.

Hopefully it doesn't deter any of the survivors from enjoying the outdoors as well.

Bears with cubs are always a threat. They have poor eyesight, great noses. Sometimes the wind can determine whether you are apt to surprise them. Make lots of noise, wear bells on backpacks. Be intensely aware.

I have backpacked/fished in Griz country many times in Montana and Wyoming and sighted them on occasion. In the backcountry you have more to fear from the elements than large mammals. I *carry* more from fear of two legged beasts than of four.

Well, at least it appears some of them paid attention and learned some of the skills they were taught...

Hopefully those injured will heal with no permanent disabilities.

Maybe the NOLC should incorporate riflery into their curriculum, and have an adult for each team who can protect and supervise the yutes.

No mention of even having bear spray.

This is seriously an issue that needs to be addressed with these organizations.

IIRC the boy scouts don't allow firearms on their camping trips as well. genius
