3 Rapid City Police Officers Shot, 1 Dead

Apparently the officers were making a routine contact when one of the men pulled a gun and began firing. One officer, James Ryan McCandless, was killed, two others wounded, one seriously. Officer McCandless was a six-year veteran, originally from Michigan.

    Full story here

This is hard for those of us who live here to believe. Although intellectually you're always aware that "this sort of thing can happen anywhere," it comes a quite a shock when it actually does. Firearms are prevalent in this town; shootings are not. This is the first time the RCPD has lost an officer this way since 1916.

My thoughts and prayers are with the officers.

    That sucks.

I'm tired of cops losing their lives on the job.
I'm in favor of gun control -- I think every citizen should have control of a gun.

Exreamly sad, prayers for their families. Greatest sacrifiece made for ALL of us. There sould be a thread or something purely for honoring those that have fallen. LEO, Fireman, and teachers should make what professional sports players make.

    "A Part of America Died"
    Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
    with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
    in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

Ya'll in blue and badges be careful out there! This happens far to often.

Too bad the perp lived,This is the type of case after he is convicted they drag him outside and hang him,no appeals since he is definitely guilty of Capital Murder

Another example of the perils faced from a " routine " stop.

You need to train the new officers, there is no such thing as a "ROUTINE CONTACT!" Prayers for fallen officer, his family and co-workers.
