Shooting Spree at Carson City IHOP

Breaking story: One confirmed dead in Carson City shooting; eight transported to hospitals | Reno Gazette-Journal | rgj.com

The latest news as of 10:50 AM Pacific:
    By F.T. NORTON
    ftnorton@nevadaappeal.com
A gunman armed with an automatic rifle opened fire on and inside an IHOP restaurant Tuesday morning in Carson City, injuring several people and leaving at least one person dead in what was described as a methodical attack that also endangered customers in adjacent restaurants.

Multiple medical helicopters ferried wounded to area hospitals while authorities temporarily shut down busy Interstate 395, just yards from the shooting scene.

Ralph Swagler, owner of the adjacent Locals BBQ restaurant, told the Nevada Appeal that he saw the gunman pull up in a minivan, get out and begin firing an automatic rifle at the IHOP. The gunman then reloaded and went inside, and Swagler said he heard more gunshots inside the restaurant.

Swagler said bullets fired from inside IHOP shattered windows and struck his building as well as an adjacent H&R Block office.
Swagler said he had a handgun and considered opening fire on the shooter, but he didn’t want to engage a gunman who was armed with a fully automatic weapon.

Swagler’s son Ryan, who also works at the restaurant, said he heard the shots and was locking Locals’ front door when he and the gunman saw each other from across the parking lot. That’s when the gunman opened fire on Locals, striking it and the H&R Block office nearby.

Ryan Swagler said he saw an older woman walking toward an adjacent McDonald’s but was able to wave her off, and she took shelter inside Locals with the Swaglers.
The morning scene was chaotic, with diners having breakfast at IHOP and McDonald’s along the busy stretch of interstate, which doubles as Carson City’s main street.

Witnesses at the Casino Fandango, across the street from the IHOP, reported seeing bullet holes in the wall of the casino.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong scheduled a news briefing for 11 a.m.
Unfortunately it can happen anytime, anywhere. My heart goes out to the victims.

11:12 AM PST Update: Nine victims were shot, three killed. Two of the three killed were National Guardsmen in uniform. The gunman shot himself before LEOs arrived on scene. Gunman was last known to be alive but not expected to survive.

You have to be ready and prepared to do what you need to do to survive. Like the old cowboys, I sit with my back to a wall where I can watch what is going on, I also know where the exits are.

It sounds paranoid to some until you read stories like this, then it makes you sound like a genius.

Pure speculation but either the NGs were targeted or made a stand.

So much for IHOP's no guns policy.

Horrible. Stuff like this makes the decision to carry all the more "sane". Unfortunately nothing any of us carry concealed is much of a match for a rifle. Its too bad the guy next door didn't think he could get a shot off...

As I keep saying, there seems to be more and more dings surfacing.

While a handgun is no match for a rifle, one good or lucky shot could go a long ways toward ending such an incident, possibly saving some lives.

Absolutely. Sometimes I just grab the little TCP .380 in a pocket holster when I'm just running out to the store and whatnot. Really makes me think about that... because thinking through a situation like this, its hard to imagine having a little pea shooter like that. The .45 seems insufficient, let alone...

But I can pretty much hit what I'm looking at with my LCP .380, and I can often place a hand on it without ever being noticed. Of course, it's comforting to have the .45 IWB on tap as well.

Let's hope we don't get the point where we feel the need to carry combat rifles wherever we go.

Trust me, I would if I could. AK strapped over the shoulder sounds about right. I can also hit what I aim at with the TCP, but unless a shot is VERY well placed, its probably much less likely to be an "attention getter" than the 45. This guy was hell bent on destruction anyway, so regardless it would have taken more than a couple shots to stop him I think. He doesn't sound like the run-of-the-mill thug who really wasn't planning on dying that day, but just getting stuff/money.

    Sad... So sad...

My thoughts go out to the victims...

I joke about everything, but this one I can only express my sympathy...
