We had a security guard killed by a copper thief nearby a few years ago.

Here's the updated link. I'm glad to see they caught the guy:

This is getting to be quite prevalent. There was a thing on the news last night, don't recall where, where thieves were stealing hanging power lines. The power companies were going to aluminum lines to end the problem.

Went to steal copper, got lead instead. Play stupid games...win stupid prizes.
Over Labor Day weekend, we had a school in Pinellas county Fl. that had 14 A/C units stolen.
I know those tax dollars could have been put to better use.

I work in the voice/data cabling industry. 24 gauge wire scraps at close to $3.00 per pound. When you get into 0, 0/2, 0/4 and larger gauge it can go for quite a bit more. Theft of copper is no longer a petty crime. It is a major problem in the cabling industry.

After the Joplin, MO tornado on May 22, I talked to a police officer who caught looters filling up their trailers with downed powerlines with hopes of driving them to scrap yards in other states. Disasters can stir up a lot of scum, but thankfully the amount of selflessness and good will from the volunteers in Joplin far outweighed the looting.

This whole copper theft issue is concerning me about the new electric vehicle charging infrastructure they are building. Those charging stations (for those who haven't seen) have a fairly long and thick copper cable on them. They can range from 10 to 20 feet, and since they are designed to carry a lot of current they are pretty thick gauge. I could see rampant copper thieves destroying the entire industry before it gets started.

A copper thief can always wear a "few more grams" of copper and cash it in at the ER.

To me that would not be a bad thing.

Amazing how times have changed. When I was a kid (late 50's), a friend's dad was a security guard at the Ford plant in Mahwah, NJ. Saw a guy stealing a huge wrench one night, ordered him to stop, the guy ran. My friend's dad shot him with a .30-30... no big deal. The guy survived, the cops came and took the thief away, and it was back to business as usual. No special prosecutor was appointed to investigate, no one rioted to protest. And I just thought my friend's dad was really cool.
