Campus Police shoot rifleman outside Elizabeth City State U, NC
Gunman shot on Elizabeth City State University campus; Lockdown lifted after gunman taken into custody - WTKR
"A former student brought an assault rifle to campus early this morning (November 5, 2011). During a routine foot patrol by University Police, the
officers observed some students running from the backside of campus stating there was a guy with a rifle. The campus was placed on lockdown. University Police saw a black male holding an assault rifle. A confrontation occurred and the suspect was shot by a University Police officer. The suspect was still armed and rushed away to a wooded area adjacent to the campus.
Tragedy averted.

That assault rifle had more range than the distance those kids were, and he could have started shooting any time he wanted, now if even ONE of those kids were armed, well I won't get into that. Just wait for the campus police I guess.

It's always a "assault rifle".
Pick your flavor.
Maybe it was a fully automatic AK or M-16.
Article dosen't state make or model of the "assault rifle".
Glad it all worked out for the good guys.

This story seems odd to me.
A 9mm might expand but a .45 will never shrink enough to fit 17 in the magazine.

Something odd here to me also. This was a rifle vs pistol they should have all run for safety. Pistol is of no use against a rifle. Pistols lose every time just run.
OK I'm back to sanity, Nothing here folks just move along

Hits win. Will to fight wins. If you can't hit anything, and have no will to continue the fight once you encounter resistance; it does not really matter what you have. Undoubtedly, this guy had second thoughts once he was met with force. That said, I'd rather not take on a rifle with a pistol. But you do what you have to do.

chiefjason, I agree 100%. To understand what I was getting at in my post you have to know what was in the back of my mind. But there was a lot of sarcasm there.
There may be those who knows, (but who really knows).

Damn. Here I was, having just disarmed an idiot with a black rifle, carrying the weapon to a secure location and some other idiot with an illegal concealed gun is attempting to shoot ME!

Better just lay it down and wait for the campus police.

And we are sure the guy didn't just get lost poaching? It is deer season in that part of the state.
Could be he just didn't want to get hooked up for having a gun on campus and hunting w/o a license.
I didn't see anything about his reason for being there or him attempting any violence other than the "confrontation" which has no further description. That "confrontation" could be officers approaching from his rear, yell to him and he turns (pointing weapon as he does so, not necessarily aiming) and officer fires. He then runs away.
I would call him a man with a gun on campus as opposed to a "gunman". I think the media are making an assertion that is not supported by the facts as reported.

No Protection
The thing about waiting for the police a lot of people could have been shot before they could get there. Its like where i workNo guns on company propriety and we are not in a town so it could take the sheriff 15 to 20 minutes to get some one there and a lot can happen in that time just like that school kids could have been shot. I know we all still remember VA tech a few years ago.

I suspect campus security aren't thoroughly trained in the limitations of a handgun when facing a rifle so it doesn't surprise me that he jumped into the fight. Nevertheless, this is a story where a gun accomplished what rules and laws could not: prevention of a tragedy.

Could be that's all the officer had at the time and he didn't want to see students getting shot. I would have been more disappointed if he had left the area thinking he didn't have the fire power to win.
