And I thought there were stringent requirements and burdensome classes to attend to have a carry permit in MA. Looks like they forgot to teach a few things.

“Our investigation has confirmed an accidental discharge of a firearm,” said O’Leary. “No one else was injured.”
No, no, no, get the terminology correct; it was a negligent discharge.

“There is not a security checkpoint that would prohibit that from being in your vehicle, and we don’t have anything written up in terms of what is allowed or what isn’t allowed in the parking lot,” said James.

I guess you're allowed to shoot yourself...

Considering it's MA, I read that remark to mean new security checkpoints and written regulations are on the way!

There are. So assuming he doesn't have the appropriate documentation, he now has other issues besides a hole in his leg.

There may be more to this story than we're told.

First thought on this part, "The 50-year-old man, who was not identified, was trying to empty the chamber of a licensed handgun when the gun went off at around 3 p.m."

At that age he has had some experience so perhaps there could have been a genuine mechanical malfunction.

Then I read the rest: "Foxborough Police said that they could not confirm or deny whether alcohol was involved in the incident."

Hmmmm Ya think? at 3 P.M.?

Unfortunately, this seems to happen more often where people are forced to disarm to enter a location.

" The 50-year-old man, who was not identified, was trying to empty the chamber of a licensed handgun when the gun went off "; of course, the gun went off by itself . I am very that the man got shot, but it was not an accident, it was his own fault.

Another reason why it is best to remove the gun IN the holster and lock it up. Clearing and reloading just add additional opportunities for negligent or accidental discharge.

Loading and unloading, spring tension and dynamite, what could possibly go wrong? A lot of leg shots happen behind the steering wheel. How many rules do you have to break in order to shoot yourself? I have a personal rule never to mess with any dangerous tools unless I have free range of motion and undisturbed focus. It doesn't count when I fall asleep at the wheel.
