This is probably a stupid question, but I have forgotten the answer. What is the minimum legal shotgun barrel length?

Hmm, wonder what the spent shell was used for...

same pretty much everywhere. BUT I believe (not positive tho) that you can purchase a shotgun at that length but that you cannot modify your gun to that length. IOW's has to be factory built. At least in many states.
I carry to protect myself and my loved ones from the BG's. Not to solve societies problems. That said: if more carried the deterrent would only have a positive overall effect on those problems.

I believe you CAN modify your own... but the barrel beyond the chamber must be greater than 18". I think that's correct but I don't have regs in front of me...

From back of chamber IOW where the rim of shell sits when inserted in chamber to front of barrel must be at least 18",most factory guns ar 18 1/2" so there is no chance of being under length by a small margin,You can have a shorter barrel length in class 3 states, but must be registered as a SBS(Short Barrel Shotgun)

I think if he'd left it in the trunk he wouldn't have been as likely to be arrested. I mean, it's great that they DID catch him; I'm just a little upset that he was dumb enough to get caught. Because that's become the 'norm' now.

Doesn't matter if harm happens or not. There are plenty of things we all must do/ or not do, and there are criminal penalties if you violate them. Harm isn't the determining factor. Who do you harm if you carry a concealed gun into a prohibited place? Harm isn't the standard for deciding right from wrong.

My Buddy has a legal SBS 870 pump with a pistol grip and barrel is cut off even with the 4 round mag tube,Its a handfull, but I would rather have a stock ,much more controllable and easier to keep muzzle on target while working the pump action

It's just another useless law that makes a thing, illegal.

He might have been plinking with it, who knows?

Beleive it or not, short shotguns are very popular. If you live in an NFA friendly state, you can have one. If you live in a state where people fear things, then you cant.

With that being said, the guy just about guaranteed himself an extended stay with Bubba in the GrayBar Hotel.

Harm to others should be a determining factor when creating these laws in my opinion. Without harm we are just banning folks from doing stuff we don't want them to do.
If you have a sawed off shotgun how have you harmed me? Possession should not be a crime. Harming others should be.

When I read Amendment II I don't see where it says a sawed off shotgun if not allowed.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. When did they amend those words? Making a Law is not amending the amendment.

My thoughts is most gun laws are unconstitutionial.
