AK-47 attack: Man shoots at cops, injures 2, in St. Cloud 'war zone'

Suspect David Alyn Penney shot himself in the head with assault rifle after exhanging gunfire with cops

    12:39 p.m. EST, November 21, 2011
A man armed with two AK-47s shot and injured one police officer and sent glass flying into another officer before shooting himself in the head with one of his assault rifles early this morning in St. Cloud, police said today.

The suspect, 18-year-old David Alyn Penney of St. Cloud, is expected to survive. Detectives with a search warrant this afternoon are removing bags of evidence from Penney's house on Lakeshore Boulevard.

Just before 2 a.m. today, several people who live in the area of 8th Street and Alabama Avenue called 911 to notify police that a man had opened fire at a home in the 600 block of Alabama Avenue, Chief Pete Gauntlett said.

Police said they think the rounds fired by Penney were full-metal-jacketed-military-style rounds. The bullets penetrated the home's concrete-block exterior.

Joseph Murray, 18, who lives in the house but was not home at the time of the shooting, said at least 10 rounds went through the walls and windows into the front area of the house. Murray said his father and other family members had been in the home, but there were no other injuries.

"It's another crazy day in St. Cloud," Murray said.

When two police officers arrived in the general area, Penney reportedly opened fire on their patrol car. Bullets passed within an inch of the face of Officer Spencer Endsley, who was behind the wheel of the patrol car and has been employed by the police department for just three weeks, police said.

Endsley and Officer Clinton Wise, a three-year veteran of the police force, exchanged shots with Penney. Wise sustained a gunshot wound to his foot, police said.

Penney, standing in the middle of the street, then placed the muzzle of one of his weapons under his chin and fired. He was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where doctors operated on him. He was last reported to be in stable condition and is expected to live.

Wise also was transported to ORMC. Endsley, who was wounded by glass in his eyes, face and arm, was treated and released from St. Cloud Hospital.

"The officers did a remarkably good job," Gauntlett said. "They not only saved their own lives, they protected the neighborhood."

Penney is thought to have been angry at one of the residents of the Alabama Avenue home because he thought that person was somehow involved in wrecking his vehicle.

Murray said he thought he had seen Penney once or twice before, possibly several months ago. He thought Penney might be a friend of his older brother, but was not sure.

Police said they had responded to the home several times in the past for various reasons.

Investigators found Penney's two guns in the street. Each of the assault rifles had a 30-round magazine in it. Full magazines were also discovered nearby and up the street. Penney also had a Bowie knife with him, police said.

In front of the Alabama Avenue home, law-enforcement officers have placed at least 17 crime-scene markers that are likely to indicate where they found gun cartridges. About a dozen similar markers were placed about 50 feet south of the home at the intersection of 7th Street and Alabama.

Police found evidence that Penney fired more than 100 rounds.

Several police cars and a television crew were outside Penney's own home on Lakeshore Boulevard at mid-morning today. No one answered the door and no vehicles were at the house.

Investigators searched the one-story cinderblock bungalow. At mid-morning, a detective left the home with an evidence bag.

One of Penney's neighbors, who identified herself only as Mary, was shocked to hear the news.

"That was David? I heard it on the news this morning," she said, after describing Penney and his family as wonderful neighbors for the past seven years.

It's legal in Florida for an adult to own an AK-47. The assault rifle was developed after World War II and is one of the most popular military weapons in the world. Manufacturers have made about 100 million of the weapons.

Law-enforcement officers from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol helped St. Cloud police during the attack and initial investigation, Gauntlett said.

The police department is still investigating the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will also conduct an investigation.

Sure woulda saved the taxpayers a lot of money and future trouble if this guy had managed to properly kill himself. Yeah, I know that sounds callous, and it is, but it's the way I feel.

It just goes to show that he apparently was brainless since a headshot only wounded him

Wow, just three weeks on the job, what a way to get an introduction to law enforcement work. Good job in staying alive.

He probably believed all the anti-bs about AK-47's : like "one bullet to your abdomen cleans out EVERYTHING there". Sure...
Anti-gunners seem to believe that if we just pass enough laws, we can have utopia. Unfortunately, utopia is NOT one of our choices.

yep, the shooter was actually using two real AK-47's. 7.62x39mm......fired over 100 rounds into the house and the cop car.
This is one time the journalists got it right.

maybe "real"....but to the sheep, an AK47 is a fully automatic machine gun..these were probably semi auto only...since the report stated "any adult can own one"...I hate when the media does that...with AK's and if it was an AR15 they always call it an "M16 type " rifle to get the sheep to again picture rambo shooting full auto.
