Home defense is home defense....no matter how you slice it. "Unorthodox" methods are for those who have no will to survive.
This dirtbag is lucky he left with his head.
The victim obviously needs a sword sharpening kit.![]()

I don't know that I have ever read the word "smote" in a news item before!

Good job by Olson for using what was available.
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

BG ashamed of being "smote" tried to say he was shot, which he should have been.

It worked, but I am not in the business of hoping to be lucky when it comes to defending my family and myself. Smitten would(hopefully) be in the news article regarding the BG if it were to involve me!

Governments placed controls on swords long before the invention of firearms. Its the people not the weapon that they wish to control. When swords are outlawed only outlaws will have swords...

I actually have a set of reproduction Samurai swords that are sharpened 440 steel. The Katana is about 42" long and the Wakizashi sword is shorter, about 24". I know a minimal amount of technique in using them.
In the hands of someone adept, these weapons can be deadly, and even with amatuers, the slashing effect of a long sharp sword can cause fatal injuries.
Here in my hometown of Huntington, we had the case of a man who was attacked in an appartment by a sword weilding person. He got slashed across his midsection, ran down the street bleeding profusely and bled to death before EMT's could save him.
This slug is very lucky he didn't get his head lopped off. I could be very easy to do just that with a sword.

Too bad it wasn't a 'real' sword.
The guy was only 17 and therefore couldn't have a gun; I have many 'replica' swords that I have sharpened and made ready 'just in case'. They aren't the first thing I reach for, but definitely would do the job as long as I could get a good strike in.

Please take everything I say with at least one grain of salt- I am a very sarcastic person with a very dry sense of humor.
Pun intended? (slice)
I think the guy with the sword exhibited all sorts of will to survive using what ever was at hand to do so. The victim was 17 years old, wouldn't be permitted to own a gun, had a sword, had made the decision to defend himself, and he did. I think he did just fine. There is no orthodoxy to self defense. There are no style points. Either it works or it doesn't.
