    Fayetteville homeowner shoots suspected burglar

Fayetteville, N.C. — Cumberland County authorities have arrested two men in connection with a home break-in over the weekend in which the homeowner scared them off after shooting one of them in the chest.

The woman told sheriff's deputies that she was taking a nap in her home on Grape Arbor Drive, east of Fayetteville, Saturday afternoon when she heard glass breaking.

She grabbed the shotgun, police said, went into the kitchen and saw the hand of a man attempting to unlock a window.

She fired a shot when yelling didn't scare them away. The two teens then fled the scene, and the woman called 911 to report the crime, according to investigators.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office later charged Dashawn William Smith, 18, of the 200 block of Ellington Road in Fayetteville, after he was admitted to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to the chest.

The so-called Castle Doctrine presumes that an intruder is there to do harm, and the homeowner is not required to retreat.
So-called reporter just had to get a jab in.

Oh, I'm sure those dear sweet boys were just stopping by for milk and cookies. If only the homeowner had waited, the boys would have revealed their innocent motives.

In this case, that presumption proved to be correct. Case closed.

"So called" or not, we have it, I like it. Glad everything worked out for the homeowner. However, it is starting to annoy me that every time this happens they have to mention the CD. Like we don't have a right to defend ourselves in our own home? Good grief people, get a grip.

Sounds like she used bird shot, might have worked against 2 unarmed Kids, but theres a better chance that the BG breaking in will be armed career criminal possibly under the influence of drugs/alcohol,and I really don't want to use a load that will just make him mad

I guess the reporter is saying one should be required to run and cower from someone attempting to harm them.

Better to live (armed) on your feet than die on your knees. How sad that there are so many in America that will no longer stand and fight.

Can someone that knows this very kind lady (in the news article), who shot this 'innocient' young man, please go over to her house, comfort her, and teach her that a much larger caliber round is a better choice?

I don't think caliber is an issue for her, but I do agree she ought to consider a heavier load, like 00 or slugs.

Glad it all worked out for her.

Yeah, the Castle Doctrine is the problem!! I'd say someone needs to buy her a box of 12 ga. Winchester PDX/1. Or at least some 00 buck.

Obviously the 'reporter' thinks the victim is the perp, not the home owner... nothing like slanting the story...

feel bad for the perp? nope... he got what he deserved...

People are tired of being victims!
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
