His guns were in the closet and none within reach?? Bad choice on his part. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out who tipped this criminals off. Guns in a closet and a safe? Start with relatives with drug problems first.

You know... I agree 100% with those who think they should have had something close to hand with which to defend themselves.
But who tipped off the thugs?
Travis, that's who.
You don't know Travis.
They didn't know Travis.
So who is Travis?
Travis is just "6 degrees of separation" or less between you and the thugs that are going to hit your house, or my house or anyone else's house, because Travis told 'em about the stuff you might have.
You've raised your kids well, and told them that they shouldn't say anything about what you have in your home to any one... And they don't, for the most part...
Well, son Bill did kinda mention that his old man had a nice old Luger he brought back from WWII to a guy at work....
Oh yeah, and he was askin' a buddy at the water cooler if he should consider gettin' a safe... His dad had one.. and it didn't seem such a bad idea.
It ain't much that was said... but maybe it was enough... maybe the one of the office cleaning crew heard it, or snippets of it. Just enough... Let's see... your name is Smith... you sit in the third cube down the second row... Look, you've got pictures of you and the family in front of that house you bought... And there's an insurance bill on your desk... And then there's the whitepages dot com... and some of your relations come up in the paid searches...
And off we go...
It really doesn't take much...
Is it something to be paranoid about? no... but it is wise to be mindful of it... and prepared for it... If you have something that somebody wants. If they want it bad enough... some will try to take it.
