I'm glad the officer is ok. From the story, two lessons are reinforced:
1. Don't count on being able to hit your target, even at point-blank range. Practice, practice, practice.
2. Get to cover as soon as possible.

It fails to mention a motive. Did the undercover officer do something that could have provoked this? Glad he's gonna be okay regardless.

Cops are taught to try to aggressively take control of whatever situation they are in. That reflex kicking in at the wrong time probably explains about half the time they get shot by uniformed cops and the criminals they are investigating.
The other half being that the job calls for them doing things the rest of us would consider stupid for us to try, like trying to get info on what a drug dealer is doing, etc.

I strongly agree, we as civilians (most of us) know when to "bite our tongue" and try not to provoke a situation as much as possible. But I've seen first hand that being an officer completely changes you, and most of the time that attitude sticks with you both on and off duty which can be a very dangerous thing, especially trying to go undercover.
I would really like to know how this situation started, if they release the story please keep us posted.
