bad-Oregon county releases inmates amid budget cuts

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Dozens of inmates ran whooping from a small town jail into the sunshine Wednesday after a cash-strapped county in Oregon's timber region was forced to release them amid budget cuts.
How stupid can the system get... we have billions of dollars to give way to foreign countries bet can't take care of our own. Sounds like the town’s people need to vote the sheriff out

The sheriff's office was forced to cut staffing to levels not seen since 1991 after voters emphatically turned down a $12 million levy to plug a gap left by the expiration of federal timber subsidies. Since then, applications for concealed weapons permits have skyrocketed, many taken by people concerned that the sheriff's cuts will lead to a rise in crime.

We wouldn't be in this mess if the namby pamby people didn't get all up in arms about making inmates COMFORTABLE. If jail was a place that was like it used to be - no cable/satellite tv, meals that were more like the type that Sheriff Joe Arpaio (sp?) from Maricopa County Arizona served, and more then there would be less cost and more about punishment than anything. Frustrates the h out of me.

If the zoos did this the populace would be up in arms! Nah, it's only a jail, what harm could it possibly cause

I live in Grants Pass. This is a serious situation. The night they let the criminals loose, a massive robbery occurred in a local business. CHL applications are up about 300%. Last week I went in to pick up my CHL renewal and there was a line of people extending out into the lobby of people waiting to have their applications processed...including some quite elderly folks. There were stacks of applications on the counter.

The Sheriff has only 3 deputies on patrol...only 5 days a week...and only one shift. 911 calls will get no response unless it is a life-threatening situation...and then only if someone is on duty. Our Sheriff is a good man. He will undoubtedly be responding to dangerous calls without backup. He is very pro-concealed carry, and has been holding a series of meetings in the community encouraging people to get a CHL, and making them familiar with self-defense law. I'm in total agreement with the poster who said it's ridiculous that we give away billions in foreign aid and have a domestic need like this. It stinks to drive by the jail, and see 15 patrol cars parked in the compound gathering dust

The people voted against a massive tax increase that would have funded the SO's budget...however it also included money for many other county operations. With its defeat, the justice system here is in shambles. Drug cases, DUI cases, domestic cases, and others will no longer be prosecuted

Well, at least the money getting spent on carry licenses is doing the populace a lot more good vs. giving it to a historically wasteful government entity that has no duty to protect you.

Grants Pass = TARGET RICH ENVIRONMENT
The situation will NEVER BE THE WAY YOU WANT, it WILL BE THE WAY IT IS. You must be FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ADAPT and just "DEAL WITH IT".
