Criminals do such things, and approaching one during the commission of a crime puts a person at risk of everything under the sun, up to and including the potential to be murdered outright for the effrontery of daring to question the idiot's crime. Incentive to avoid capture and to profit from crime can be powerful motivators to a criminal. Combined with a deadly weapon and no compunction, a deadly encounter isn't unlikely. Beyond that, the average citizen simply needs to appreciate that there are good reasons why police wear bullet-proof vests.

Absolutely. If a person's willing to waltz into a crime-in-progress blindly, armed with nothing other than outrage at the violation, then a person had better be willing to accept the likelihood of meeting violent resistance head-on ... ready, nor not. Reality's harsh, for the unwitting.

It would've been her only legal course of action, unless she can outrun bullets. She couldn't have legally come out shooting in NC because theft and trespassing (outside the home) are not legal justification for deadly force.

She didn't come out shooting... she came out and got shot at... she could have used deadly force in NC or most anywhere else, including Chicago, to defend against the deadly force being used on her...

OTOH...

Stuff is insured, or should be... wouldn't be worth it to me to try to stop the thief... but to get a tag number if possible and call it in. In Texas, she probably could have gotten into her car, chased 'em, and shot 'em down... but that's Texas...

Police did not identify the victim but a police report says she had a serious, but non-life-threatening injury from at least one gunshot wound. The report lists a second victim who was threatened by the gunman, but not hurt, and says as many as three guns may have been involved.

So the guns were responsible for the crime and not the criminals behind the guns.
