Looks like he went to this ATM in condition white at a late hour of the evening, two no-no's. Otherwise it appears he did what he could to retreat and got shot for his trouble. Hope he recovers and that the thug(s) end up nourishing the gators.
A very similar thing just happened here Monday, a walk up ATM though, I read they believe the guy was hiding behind the building. The victim was shot in the face.

I avoid ATM's like the plague. I prefer to get cash back from a transaction in a store if I need cash.
ATMs are bad news. I stay away! Very rarely carry cash and when I do I get it when I'm checking out somewhere.
Drive through ATM's create a blind spot behind them. Plus, there are more blind spots behind posts and other bank structures. Depending on your particular ATM's location, you might want to run through some defensive scenarios.
Don't allow a large gap between the ATM and your car window.
Lock all doors with other windows up.
Leave the engine running in drive with foot on brake.
Keep scanning during the whole process.
Have your gun and cell phone immediately accessible.
If you have to drive off without your card, the ATM will eat it, and the bank will send you another.
I just go in the grocery store anymore, buy a bag of Skittles, and get $40 cash back. No fee either....Quote:

I go to walk-up and drive-thru ATM's. It tourqs SHMBO'd when I make a circle thru the area in my truck before driving up.
I won't be scared to use 'em, but I'll have reconed the area first (at night particularly) before proceeding. It's just common sense. Pay attention or wait til morning.
