From the Detroit Free Press today

The weapon, a department-issued, 40-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol, was in a holster worn inside the officer's waistband and was covered by his shirt, Goldpaugh said.

The holster has been submitted as evidence.

This is really fishy. S&W M&P .40 in a holster does not just get grabbed and go off. Hit her in the lungs and heart? I have a feeling this will get ugly for the LEO.

I'd have to see this re-enacted. It doesn't seem possible. Murder, on the other hand, is.

I'll throw my guess out there. I'm thinking horizontal shoulder rig and an M&P. No way she got shot in the chest with an IWB holstered gun. I hate stories like this that are vague and stupid on the most important details.

Something smells funny here.... If he was a LEO then I would assume he is intelligent enough to be carrying his weapon in a proper holster...

Guns in proper holsters don't just go bang...

There is something they aren't reporting or the officer misled investigators as to what happened... Or the departments media person thinks we are all morons/sheeple

Sad that a young innocent woman had to lose her life.
I agree - too many holes in this story.

Strange story. Seems like he had to be using a horizontal shoulder holster for the discharge to pierce both lung and heart. Also would like to know what type gun he was carrying. Story said it was his service gun, but we all know how accurate the press is.

As stated, by a previous poster, it was an IWB S&W .40 autoloader, according to the above link to the Detroit Free Press.

Just not coming up with an angle for the gun to go off in an IWB and shoot her in the chest, unless her chest was below his waistline. The DFP article says she was flirting with him, and the mother says the story keeps changing about what we really going on.

Guess we'll have to wait or we'll never know.

Another story says he was dancing with his wife when she came up and hugged him from behind... nothing adds up.

2 people know for sure, and one of them is dead.

    The mystery deepens:

Chief Ralph "Godbee said the gun was in a waist holster made of soft material, which would have allowed the trigger to be activated. He said there's no evidence the officer fired the gun, and he believes the gun discharged after Miller hugged the officer from behind early Sunday during a party at the officer's home.

"There was some manipulation along the officer's waistline (that) he did not control," Godbee told reporters.

    1. Party at the officer's home.
    2. Officer said he didn't know the girl.
    3. Officer said he was dancing with his wife at the time.
    4. Girl came up from behind and hugged the officer.
    5. Gun was IWB, covered by a shirt.
    6. Girl shot in chest.

It's simply not possible for all of this to be true at the time the gun went off unless the holstered gun did a 180 (clip-less holster for example), and the gun started coming out, leaving the trigger exposed.

IWB with a forward lead puts the barrel aiming toward the rear, albeit at a downward angle. I suppose she could have been on her knees hugging him from behind and messing with his belt, hitting the trigger. Any way it happened, a very sad situation.
