Would not be surprised if alcohol was involved here. Any cop worth his/her badge would notice when their gun is being messed with. More to be revealed in this tragic event, I'm sure.

If she hugged him from his gun side 4 or 8 o'clock, the heart-lung shot would make sense given a shoulder rig. I can't imagine the grief he must be feeling now.

Woman's fatal hug with officer called 'freak accident'

[Police Chief Ralph] Godbee said the gun was in a waist holster made of soft material, which would have allowed the trigger to be activated. He said there's no evidence the officer fired the gun, and he believes the gun discharged after Miller hugged the officer from behind during a party at the officer's home.

May just be me but I still find this story hard to believe. Even if he were using an Uncle Mikes one size fits none nylon holster I do not see how the gun could be moved enough to cause a discharge.

    Soft material? Smartcarry maybe?

Possible, but I wouldn't think a ricochet would have enough force myself. If it was a duty weapon, it was probably loaded with JHP and a ricochet would lose a lot of power.

I am just trying to figure out some way that a gun in an IWB holster could shoot up.......

No I'm with you. I'm confused how as well.

I hope it wasn't in a Smartcarry. That would imply a whole lot more than hugging was going on.

Well, if she had not have supposedly been behind him, and it WAS a Smartcarry, then maybe he could have been "happy to see her"......

Even a soft sided holster will keep a trigger from being pulled. I think the odds of her being shot in the heart and lung suggest being shot from the side.

There's a whole lot of stink around this story.
