Rhetorical question: When did being a hireling get elevated to an "authority"?

Kudos to the county for firing him forthwith. He's fortunate he didn't get taken down by the homeowner for his "trouble."

Clearly, this guy is an idiot at best, and a predator at worst.

However, I'm still grateful for people who do this for a living, as well as HOA managers & volunteers. Try selling your home when the guy across the street doesn't cut his grass, or wants to prove a point with his neighbor by painting his house obnoxious colors.

Once I retire from developing neighborhoods, I will surround myself with acreage.

I live in a rural area populated with numerous very small towns. Populations between 500 to 1000 mostly. Many are smaller. Many of them are hiring compliance officers as a way to supplement the funds they take in from speeding tickets they give out to folks just passing through.

Yes it might just be that certain types of folks like to nit pick how other people live. It might also be that many towns go looking for these people and hire them for just that reason. Around here when hired they are told that they must bring in enough in fines to cover their own salaries and make money for the town. else they would be terminated. The last cop my little town hired was strongly given that same impression at the meeting when he was hired.

Sometimes the individual we like to blame is only doing what the city that hired him instructed him to do.

Bad: Stranger breaks into your house. Strange: Compliance Officer serving a ticket

Code Enforcement Officer Walks Into Home | ABC 6 WJBF-TV

Monday morning, Erica Masters was sleeping in her bed when Columbia County Code Compliance Officer Jimmy Vowell came to serve a violation notice for her grass being too long. Erica caught the whole incident on tape.

"He let himself in and actually came through the house and into my bedroom. And yelled at me to wake me up, to let me know that I needed to come back outside and sign the violation notice."

Erica says she was freaked out seeing a stranger in her doorway.

"I woke up, I didn't have my glasses on or my contacts in and all I see is this big burly figure standing in my doorway. A big huge guy with a grey shirt. It scared the mess out of me."

After the incident, Erica called the Sheriff's Office to file a complaint against Jimmy Vowell. The Columbia County Environmental Compliance Manager, Mike Anderson, says he is aware of the complaint and that his office is investigating it. He also went on to say that his Code Compliance Officers cannot enter someone's home without their permission, and that even if they had probable cause to enter, they would still need to be escorted by a Law Enforcement Officer. Erica feels as though her privacy was invaded by the county.

"I could have been coming fresh out of the shower. I mean, if I'm not answering the door, maybe it's because I can't hear you because I'm in the shower."

She also worries about the safety of the man who served the violation.

"He didn't even have a concern for his own safety, walking into someone's house, and just trying to get their attention when they could very well be an armed and dangerous person."

Erica says she isn't sure if she's going to press charges against Jimmy Vowell. For now, she's going to work on getting her lawnmower fixed.

"I do understand that my yard needs to be cut. I understand that. I have no problem with that. I understand them having to serve a violation notice, but the way they handled it was completely unacceptable."

Honestly, how this guy was not arrested for B&E and is still employed by the city is beyond me. He should have been arrested and fired on the spot.

How would you all have handled this situation?

IF he would have done that to my wife, itr would have propably been a mess, or to me, as i am not a hardsleeper and would have heard him come through the door, or the alarm would have, and that is a high alert situation for me, if I am in doubt, there is a castle doctrine, but if he was not shot, or hurt, there would definatly ne charges pressed and followed through, but i think one of us would have a butt whuppin coming that morning, at the least.
