If the clerk knew what he was doing that looked like a textbook chance for a disarm. If he was trying to make that move which it appears like it, he blew it as soon as he touched it. Bummer. He didn't get it and was very lucky.

It looked like the clerk could have locked the 'glass cage' that he was in when counting money, but didn't...why?
It was 11:00 and he didn't lock the front door? Or was he counting the cash before locking the door? Either way, his SA was very poor.
He is lucky that the dirtbag didn't shoot him...perhaps it was not a real gun?
"That I cannot do."

He could almost say he dodged a bullet on that one.
Why?? Because at the last second, the Police are minutes away.
He had the guts but lacked the training to carry it through.
He's lucky, glad he made it home safe

When I worked retail and closed, we NEVER counted the till until all customers were gone from the store and the doors were locked.

It is a shame. With just a tiny bit of training, he could have shot the dirtbag with his own gun.

You would think the gas station would have a drop safe to avoid having so much cash in the store. Like people have said, several mistakes here: clear the store and lock the door, then count the case. The clerk took back the advantage he had lost and surprised the gunman. Too bad he couldn't disarm him. Glad he's ok.
