TV Station posting list of permit holders

WRAL, a station in Raleigh NC has decided to publish a searchable list of concealed handgun permit holders (they did exclude names but left enough other identifying characteristics to be able to identify individuals). they were asked to remove this data and have refused. Please go to

And sign for all permit holders that we don't want this behavior to stand.

every time someone signs, WRAL, CBS and 2 senators get emails urging them to correct this.

Amazing, that anyone in a position of responsibility in any capacity can think that publishing such a list of upstanding lawful citizens does anyone any good. The assumption of such people is that such a list essentially makes us all safer by, essentially, showing who our future criminals might well be. It should make everyone's blood boil.

Of course, it comes down to what the statutes allow in a given state. Want it to be different? Push the legislature to fix this little problem.

I've never understood why such lists would ever be made public, or why they'd ever be accessible except in cases of criminal investigations where probable cause existed.

Apparently Durham county still has a law on the books requiring gun registry even though the state has pre-empted this as being illegal. It sounds like it has been grandfathered in, but I don't know of anyone (e.g. several coworkers) who abides by it.

What cracks me up about the article (and others like it) is that they try to show a connection between guns and suicides. Which is true, if one has a gun availale then it is most often used over other ways of killing oneself. But it has nothing to do with with having a CCP. Many folks have guns and do not have CCP's so the connection is stupid but unfortunatley folks beleive it. They can ban CC altogether and it would not affect suicied rates by hand guns becasue folks would still own them.

Sounds like WRAL must be run by nazis. Is their station logo a swastika? Hope all the CCW people remember this incident when the station FCC license renewal comes up. Write lots of letters in protest.

Thanks for posting, gave up on watching WRAL since most of their focus is the antics of the school board or whatever sports gang happens to be in season and then a couple of minutes for the weather squeezed in.

Permit holders should get together and compile a list of key personnel and reporters at WRAL, including their address. Then rent a billboard and post their names and addresses on it. See how they like being targets.

The Memphis, Tennessee newspaper has a link also. Enter a person's name and zip code and the database will tell you if they have a valid permit.

Now if NC had "constitutional carry" as do Alaska, Vermont, Arizona and Wyoming, this wouldn't create such an issue, would it?

Talk about unintended consequences - can you imagine if a large number of people opposed to WRAL's publishing the CCW info showed up on the sidewalk outside his house, or his TV station, all openly carrying sidearms? "Hey - you're opposed to 'secrecy' about concealed carry, how do you like this?"

Publishing names of concealed weapons holders only serves to illustrate a couple of points.

The first... it is HATEFUL. Nothing but hateful. Maybe they should be prosecuted for hate crimes against CHL holders.

It show how liberals think. Somewhere among them, one of them thought he/she was doing a community service with realizing, without even thinking of the possible ramifications of publishing that info publicly.

No good will come from this. It is irresponsible, vindictive and they are doing it just because they can, its an "in your eye" sort of thing and it is ridiculous.

Unintended blowback can still occur (think: an employer's response, one that employs fearful types in hiring/firing roles). It's one's right to be armed. But IMO it also should be a person's right to keep that private if one chooses. There's no excuse for public airing of such data except bad prejudices and the bad statutes that allow such publication.
