It appears that they thought he was a homeless man. Why the hate against the homeless? I don't get it.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man?

I pray for his recovery and that they catch the perps. I fear we're going to see a lot more depravity before it gets better. Stay aware, armed, and alright.

He could have simply been an available opportunity. Sometimes that's all it takes.

The guy was mid-way on a hike of the AT and headed into town. He had just exited a bar at midnight and was walking alone down the street. He then verbally engaged the people in the car who were making the taunts. They were several, in the car. Not a recipe for success, though it's unclear exactly what was said. Still, nothing justifies such a crime.

Another good reason to be armed.

The scum that did this should be executed, no just put down. Not only was the crime heinous in nature, but they may well have ruined this guys hike. The average AT hiker takes six months to complete his journey, and not even half of those that attempt the AT hike make it as far as this hiker did. Very sad.

They seem to like offering sacrifices to the fire gods. Then they shouldn't mind meeting them personally.

I agree - automatic and immediate death penalty for anyone who sets someone else - or an animal - on fire. Those people will hurt others if not stopped

The use of lethal force in the crime of Arson is legal here in Arkansas.
Cleary, someone tried to set you or someone else,(defense of a third person) on fire would have met the legal definition of self defense.

I hiked the AT a few years back from Georgia to Maine. I found PA to be an extraordinarily beautiful 240 mile section, but the people there had very little respect for the back country facilities, the trail, the springs, or the hikers. The shelters were always trashed and full of garbage with boards and benches torn up for fire wood. The only run-ins I had with unfriendly people in 5 months was in PA, although some of the homeowners along the trail corridor were the friendliest most hospitable people, and especially generous in sections with very little ground water. They'd leave notes on trees at road crossings to come get water from their spigots. I know better than to judge everyone there by my two weeks in the state, but it always makes me think about it when I read this kind of stuff.

Am I the only one that does not care why they did this crime? What was on their mind or even the race, religion or favorite spots team of anyone involved?
Just catch them and remove them from society forever.

The crimes have ceased surprising me. About the only thing that does anymore is the abject apathy on the part of people and the elected representatives to do a damned effective thing about it.

Wasn't too many years ago when people were hanged outright for being convicted of such crimes. If nothing else, it would solve the revolving-door crime school education the People cover for these animals. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the cost savings alone could erase the budget deficits of one-third of the states.
