Well, he's not a wuss, after all. Cowering behind the door would've made him appear a wuss in the eyes of some. Can't have that. 
Wouldn't surprise me if, at the defense trial of the cretins who attempted home invasion here, their attorney implies that answering the door with firearm in hand proves he had evil intent. 'Course, the fact their size-12 boot marks are all over the door doesn't bode well for them, either. C'est la vie.

Opening the door is unorthodox to say the least. But, opening the door and getting preemptive visuals of two guys that are about to be in his house seemed to have worked out. Probably surprised them a little.
I'd be behind something with a view of the door yelling about being armed. But, I wasn't there.
Nobody got shot that didn't need shooting. A home invasion was stopped. Resident doesn't have to buy a new door. Maybe it was a custom door?
