that was a nice find.... he shoud have got something for returning it
Also conflicting stories how it was lost? Sounds like there is more to this or just is a CYA story
In another article it states
The rifle, a Colt .223 in a black nylon case, was being transferred from one patrol car to another at the end of a shift Monday morning and turned up missing soon after. The deputies were behind the Wayland police station at the time.

And yet another article;
"The Allegan County Sheriff's Office patrol rifle that went missing from a patrol car Monday night has been found.
Police say that the Colt .223 patrol rifle has sustained some damage, but should be okay to use. Lt. Baker believes the person who took the weapon may have become nervous and left it in the road"

Sounds to me like a deputy forgot it was sitting on the trunk when he drove off.

Guy rolled over it in the middle of the road...... didn't look until he returned home from being out of town working. Conflicting stories reported in the news/officer stories.
That rifle was placed on the roof/trunk and forgotten about where it fell off in the middle of the road. Just what I piece together from the little info provided.

I have always been of the opinion that the LEO inventoried their equipment when they went on each and every shift. Obviously, this cop has "lapses of memory".
The guy who"found" the rifle, after he ran it over, sounds like he figured at first, "finders keepers, losers weepers", then heard about who it belong to , then concocted a tall tale to weasel it back to the rightful owners w/o being hung out to dry.
From article;
Baker today said a man told deputies he ran over an item in the roadway Monday morning and placed what he believed was some kind of case in the back of his truck.
The man left to go out of town for work and said he did not look inside the case.
After returning later in the week, the man removed the case from his truck and looked inside. He was "shocked" to find the rifle, Baker said
PO need to be more dilligent as to where they are placing their equipment.
Lucky it was "found" by someone with a conscience

Oh, he didn't realize there was a 9lb rifle inside?....
Seems like he took it thinking it was just someones AR-15, few days later saw on the news a cops rifle is gone, then panicked and called them.

Went is a verb. Are they implying that the rifle went somewhere on its own? It does make it sound less harsh than saying that someone screwed up."The Allegan County Sheriff's Office patrol rifle that went missing from a patrol car Monday night has been found.

LEO's aren't perfect. They are human just like all of us. They screwed up, and they did some damage control. No harm no foul. Ever seen stories of the parents driving away with the baby carrier on top of the car, with junior inside?
