An 84-year-old Dickenson County man who was held at gunpoint for hours by two robbers shot and killed one of them after one of them shot him in the leg, according to authorities.
Clyde Colley, a retired businessman, is recuperating under medical care following the Dec. 14 ordeal in which one man ransacked Colley\'s Sandlick house while another kept his gun pointed at Colley and his wife.
\"He\'s a hero in my book,\" Dickenson Sheriff Bobby Hammons said of the gun-wielding octogenarian yesterday.
The man Colley shot dead was identified as Hubert Howard Jr., 39, of Letcher County, Ky.
Howard\'s alleged accomplice, Mazel Sexton, 24, also of Letcher County, Ky., is being held without bail in the Dickenson jail.
Hammons said Sexton arrived at the Colleys'door in the evening of Dec. 14. Sexton showed Mrs. Colley a gun, donned a ski mask and pushed his way inside. Once in, he used a walkie-talkie to tell Howard to come in. Howard also wore a ski mask.
The two men ordered the Colleys onto the floor, Hammons said. While one of the men ransacked the house, the other kept his gun trained on the elderly couple for two hours.
At some point in the evening, Sexton shot Colley in the calf with a .25-caliber handgun, Hammons said.
Telling the two intruders he felt ill and needed to sit, Colley was able to grab his .38-caliber pistol. He fired a shot at Howard and missed, then fired again, shooting Howard in the head. Howard\'s accomplice fled.
Because the phones in the house had been smashed during the ransacking, Mrs. Colley had to run down the driveway to flag down a passing motorist who called 911.
Sexton was arrested in Kentucky. Charges against him include two counts of robbery, two counts of abduction, two counts of burglary and maliciously shooting with the intent to kill.
Colley faces no charges.
\"He\'s a highly respected gentleman,\" Hammons said.
