FYI: NYC is the safest of the large cities in the country. I think it has been for 5 or more years - whatever the opinion of the Mayor that is a fact. It used be a national joke for high crime on Johnny Carson and other shows up to ten-fifteen years ago, remember? If Johnny was alive today he's have to ditch half his material!

And that is not because of Bloomberg but because of the the men and women of NYPD and other law enforcement professionals that work there.

Tragic human event, especially when the "gun grabbers" will use this opportunity to try to further gut the 2nd Amendment.

Having a carry permit and a handgun would not have helped those innocent bystanders. A bulletproof vest might have though.

The only person that shot any bystanders was the NYPD.

UPDATE 8-Two dead, 8 wounded in gunfire near NY's Empire State Building

    * Wounded may have been hit by police fire*

Gunman had been dismissed from job a year ago

    * Latest mass shooting rekindles debate about gun control

By Lily Kuo and Chris Francescani

NEW YORK, Aug 24 (Reuters) - An out-of-work fashion designer fatally shot a former co-worker near the Empire State Building on Friday and then was killed in a blaze of gunshots by police, stunning tourists and commuters outside of one of New York's most popular landmarks.

Eight bystanders were wounded, possibly all of them by police bullets, though none of their injuries were life-threatening, police said.

Officials said that women's accessories designer Jeffrey Johnson, 58, had been laid off from Hazan Imports a year ago and that while working there, had been locked in a dispute with the victim. Police said Johnson had claimed the victim had failed to sell enough of his creations and held a grudge.

Investigators were attempting to determine whether Johnson shot anyone beyond his initial target. All eight of the surviving victims could have been hit by the two police officers who shot at Johnson, officials said.

If it's true the 8 wounded were shot by police, they can't call this a mass shooting.

Already saw it a couple days ago. The cop did the right thing. I witnessed a pit bull rip the scrotum off of a friend. I would call that grave bodily harm!

It's not clear if the bystanders were hit by misses, or shrapnel from misses, or through-and-through shots, or a combination thereof.

What is clear is that NYPD officers need to get to the range more than once per year. 2 officers, 16 shots, only 7 hits. From 8 feet away.

The good news is that the shot bystanders have, in effect, won the lottery. Bet NYC is going to pay all of them millions. Cha-ching...
